As I'm currently on a train to go see a DEL hockey game, I wanted to ask how watching hockey in Philadelphia compares to San Jose?
Here the rinks differ so much in size based on how big the budget of the team and also the location is, although of course in the end, hockey is always hockey.
Have a nice day! :D <3333
I wanted to respond to this thoughtfully and then I forgot to respond at all :')
For me it's difficult to say, because the times that I was really deep in the Sharks arena was when the Sharks were basically at their worst so the Tank was usually pretty empty, esp on weekdays, the fans were clinging to life, and the vibes were uh. semi-hysterical depression maybe?? My main entertainment at games was, falling catastrophically in love with Mackenzie Blackwood. BUT ☝️☝️ the food far outstrips the Flyers arena, for the sheer fact that they had way more local chains so one time I had samosas at the Tank and it was literally the happiest I have ever been. Also their vegan coffee place I love you Voyager I miss you Voyager.
Also I'm not sure about how budget differs because the Flyers are owned by a massive corporation, whereas the Sharks are majority owned by the guy who invented data mining. So they're both pretty monied, just in different directions and the vibe of how that money is spent is different.
I think also, the Bay Area being what it is and the Sharks in particular being what they are, there were a lot more brown people in the arena. And while I would never belittle me and the like 25 other brown people at the xmo at any given time our joy of watching Flyers hockey, the Sharks do way more ethnic heritage nights (Los Tiburones! SEA heritage night! Lunar New Year! probably some others I am forgetting!) so it was way less. lonely?? As a brown person. Hockey Is For Everyone Not Just White People From South Philadelphia.
I think I went to like 3 sell out games ever at the Tank so I have no idea what the vibe is now that they are selling out more regularly tbh I assume louder and more joyful and fans are not creating their own sidequests because the on ice product sucks so bad. I love the Sharks!!! but they were so bad when I was there. I've heard it was genuinely insane when the Sharks were really really good earlier in the 2000s/2010s, but I sadly never experienced that.
The other main difference is that Californians by their nature are calmer, nicer, and way more obsessed with themselves, whereas Philadelphians are New England adjacent and obsessed with their sports teams. So the standard Flyers fans hold their team too is imho way higher and more intense and they Will let the team hear about it. The team Will suffer their wrath if they fail to perform. Whereas Bay Area fans, at least at the times that I was regularly attending Sharks games, were kinda like, I hope we win but failing that I hope we don't embarrass ourselves too badly (we did.)(who up for that 10-1 canucks-sharks game.) #tankforbedard/#tankforcelebrini etc. It's a huge difference in fan culture but a really interesting one. I'm curious if it has changed but I'm not really intending to return to the Bay Area for an extended period of time anytime soon so I will have to get back to you on that in several years when hopefully Kiefer Sherwood has brought the cup to San Jose multiple times. grease the palm trees!!! In the meantime Travis Konecny I need you to stunt on these hoes!!!!
I don't know if any of that says anything. Mostly I wish the Flyers arena served coffee. One time I got empanadas at the Tank and it was the second happiest I have ever been in my life, after samosas at the Tank. I am very easy to please I think.
