because i’ve seen people spreading what i’ll politely call misinformation:
being unaligned and being transmasc/transfem are not mutually exclusive
‘transmasc’ and ‘transfem’ can be just as easily used to describe your literal transition as they can your identity- if you’re an unaligned nb person, but are transitioning in a similar manner to a trans man, there’s no reason transmasc can’t be used to describe you, same with transfem. the terms transmasc and transfem were actually very commonly used with these meanings before, like a lot of nb terminology, they got shoved into binary boxes labelled ‘basically a trans man’ and ‘basically a trans woman’
similarly, being unaligned is not a simple or singular experience. unaligned people look, feel, act, and exist in society in many different ways. if you’re unaligned but materially live your life very similarly to a trans man or trans woman.... it’s just splitting hairs to try and seperate those material experiences from each other, and thus, terminology to quickly describe yourself in terms of your transition and what kind of social roles you fulfill should be available to us! and transmasc/transfem already have that meaning and are well-known
just like. leave unaligned people alone basically. we know what we’re doing.
I feel like making a genderfeels update. Some terms have been eliminated, some have been added, and others thrown into confusion due to conflicting definitions.
It’s basically like this:
[Image description: A downward-pointing triangle with the top-left corner labeled “F”, the top-right corner labeled “A”, and the bottom corner labeled “N”. A straight line cuts through the triangle from near the “A” corner to near the “N” corner.]
The “F” is for female. (Not feminine, not demigirl, not female-aligned, but female. If I spent all my time here, that would be called cisgender.)
The “N” is for a neutral gender that is not agender. More on this later.
The “A” is for aporagender, though that probably isn’t quite right either. More on this later.
I experience fluidity in nearly the entire space of this triangle, up to the line. I don’t think I’ve ever felt fully neutral or fully aporine, so I put the line there to show that. I always have some connection to female-ness.
Without going into any more detail, it is clear that the term genderfae applies, and indeed exists for exactly this kind of situation: fluidity that is never masculine. This is probably the best term for now.
Details under the cut (cut added 9 July 2019).
