Josie Byers comes out to the kids, and most accept her as herself with little more than an idle nod. But Eleven and Max are different, the former being much more curious than the others and the latter being oddly hostile. Josie talks with both girls, falling easily into her role as a big sister, one whose job it is to listen and help work things out. In the process, Josie learns that the girls may not be girls after all.

Omg I feel like there are some good posts out there about this and I can't think of any right now... if anyone knows of a good one feel free to comment! If I think of one I'll let you know. The best I've got for you at the drop of a hat is that I'm afab and nonbinary, and El did not seem, to me, to have a gender in s1. Because of that, when she donned a dress, it was just a little agender child in a dress (in my perception). Her breaking Troy's arm with a jerk of her head and then looming larger and larger on the screen with a murderous expression and uttering "go" while wearing a simple pink dress is honestly my gender LOL (reasons I play roller derby). I resonated so hard with El in s1 that I dressed as her (circa s1) for Halloween in 2019. Didn't feel like a girl at any point, bc to me s1 El isn't a girl. She's a kid who hasn't been assigned a gender yet who likes pretty dresses. Wearing dresses and other girl-associated clothes normally can cause some uncomfortable feelings for me, but on this occasion I got strangers yelling "ohhh. El!!! Hey!!! That's cool as fuck" and stuff like that. El in s1's only gender is "badass" if you ask me. Lolol In case you're wondering, I do feel that El starts to gravitate towards the gender of "girl/woman", and I have consequently related a lot less to her as the seasons have gone on. s3 especially - El seems more like a girl to me and I feel an emotional distance / the sense of being different from her, now, which tbh is something that makes me sad. Losing the nb representation that made you all starry eyed is something that can be so personal... sobs I could tangent here into some discussions that exist in the byler fandom (mike wheeler comphet discussion follows) about how El becoming more clearly aligned with womanhood has made Mike even more confused about how he feels/what his sexuality is, but this answer is already getting long so I'll stop short for now :P
