Images from the open source Dall-e mini algorithm that generates images of graffiti from text input, imagining a fictional Slovenian hip-hop subculture. Using the illegible, but still recognisable, computer created imagery to help me move beyond the conventions of graffiti as I was taught it, to imagine local styles of lettering that look like they originated in the 1990ies Europa graffiti scenen, but never that never was. Imagine that the global graffiti culture embraced the visual qualities of the cubist figuration of the historical avantgardes. Drawing what was hidden away in dusty public museums into the daylight as it emerged on the streets of Philadelphia in the early 1960s. Combining the exuberant visual language of colorful “masterpiece burners”, with a tradition of angular and reductive figuration developed to rebel against harmony and good taste. What if Avgust Černigoj (or Augusto Cernigoi), a famous Slovenian – Yugoslavian/Italian painter (1898 – 1985) did not stay at home to make a Untitled lithograph in 1958. What if he instead went ”bombing” the local Slovenian trains. What we imagined that he wanted to bring his socially critical and for its time provocative art to the streets in large format paintings on the public infra structure.
