Walking With the Wounded: Allied South Pole Challenge
Skiing 200 miles to the South Pole at -40°C is a lot like losing weight. Confused? Let us explain.
The Walking With the Wounded Allied South Pole Challenge is the largest modern-day expedition of its type. Three teams of wounded warriors -- from the UK, the US and the Commonwealth (Australia and Canada) -- will face snow storms, moving ice, and 50 mph winds while hauling 175 pounds of gear during the South Pole Allied Challenge.
In talking about the Challenge, Prince Harry (the British Royal is a staunch supporter) highlighted where we find the connection for Noomers. "It aims to harness [the veterans'] determination and energy, whilst adjusting their mindset to face the numerous challenges that lie ahead."
And that -- harnessing motivation, positivity, and a forward-facing spirit -- is exactly what Noom is trying to do with you during your weight loss journey. Over the coming months we'll draw motivation from these amazing individuals. Together we'll learn from them, find inspiration through them, and challenge ourselves to do more. KNOW that nothing is impossible.
We are so inspired by these men and women that we've decided to sponsor the US team. Team Noom Coach is comprised of four wounded servicemen and women, guide Inge Solheim, mentor Ed Parker (WWTW founder), and True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard. Noom is so proud to be a part of this expedition. We feel these wounded servicemen and women can inspire all of us to make positive changes in our lives.
The expedition is hosted by Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), a UK-based charity that helps wounded war veterans find jobs after their service in the military. WWTW stages these extreme expeditions to illustrate the extraordinary determination and courage of injured soldiers — inspiring people everywhere — while raising awareness for the organization.
During the competition, which begins at 87°S high on the Antarctic polar plateau on November 30, the teams are expected to face the toughest conditions on Earth. With each team member expected to ski for 10-12 hours every day, nutrition is a vital component to their success. Along their journey the teams will use Noom to track the estimated 6,000 calories per day they will need to consume to remain strong throughout the competition. Noom will also track the total number of steps in their journey.
Throughout the coming months, we’ll be bringing you updates from Team Noom Coach during their training, inspiring interviews with the team members, and updates from the ice. Despite the obvious differences between shedding pounds and skiing to the South Pole, we think these stories can be a huge inspiration. After all, skiing at all once seemed out of the question for many of the Noom Team Members. We hope this expedition will help you push yourself to work harder toward your goals, too.
