“Many of us had moral and philosophical convictions galore, but we could not live up to them even though we would have liked to. Neither could we reduce our self centeredness much by wishing or trying on our own power. We had to have the Universe’s help...Most good ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone of the new and triumphant arch through which we passed to freedom.”—Step Three, Big Book of AA. Pg.62 . “Carefully reading the first five steps we ask if we have omitted anything, for we are building an arch through which we shall walk a free human being at last. Is our work solid so far? Are the stones properly in place? Have we skimped on the cement put into the foundation? Have we tried to make mortar out of sand?..If we still cling to something we will not let go of, we ask the Universe to help us be willing.” —Step 5. BB. Pgs. 75-76. .
