it was tripp's fault she was even there; he was looking at the school and her parents, loving but a little flaky, had suggested she come back to town to show him around the campus she didn't go to and avoided as much as possible.
not that she didn't know it well. for a long time, it was the plan: the two of them would go to college together, live in the same dorm, take the same classes. but after that summer, it made sense for her to run and escape - heading towards school in d.c. instead, starting a life down there.
but it was inevitable that they'd run into each other, and it seemed almost laughable that she saw him first - arm around a girl, looking happier than she'd ever seen him. his girlfriend, she knew from his instagram updates, but it didn't change the fact that her heart skipped a beat at the look of surprise and genuine joy when he saw her across the party.
"hey," she greeted when he found her leaning against the doorjamb of the living room where he'd been. "surprised to see me?"
