Can your life be like cosmic existence meaningless?
Your life can mirror this only partially. First of all, there is no such thing as meaninglesness in people. There is also no such thing like purposelessness. But you can drop belief in ultimate purpose, belief that your life must “add up”, belief that past actions must be redeemed and many other beliefs.
But you cannot drop local structuring without ceasing to function. Remember, deciding to “live without meaning” is already a structuring principle. Cleaning the basement is not “meaningful” in a cosmic sense but it reorganizes space, reduces friction, and preserves viability. That is functional meaning.
So can your life be “meaningless” like the universe?
Yes, if by meaningless you mean: – no final justification – no destiny – no story that must conclude well
No, if by meaningless you mean: – no goals – no preferences – no action selection – no structuring in time
Because the moment those disappear, the organism collapses. According to Spinoza humans as finite modes cannot escape local purposes because they exist in time and constraint. But they can stop hallucinating a final purpose that would retroactively sanctify everything.
That’s the real relief. Not “nothing matters,” but nothing needs to be redeemed. Your life does not have to “mean something” in the cosmic sense any more than a star or a storm does. It only has to continue structuring itself until it doesn’t. A life without final meaning is not empty, it is unburdened. Meaning is not abolished; it is demoted from destiny to function.
