if  you  were  to  look  at  nancy  ,  you  would  never  know  her  heart  is  in  her  throat  pumping  so  fast  it  feels  like  it's  going  to  burst  out  her  windpipe  ,  or  that  she  feels  sick  to  her  stomach  and  wants  to  drop  to  the  ground  and  wait  for  things  to  go  back  to  being  easy  on  their  own  .  you  would  never  know  that  she's  been  scared  since  she  was  sixteen  and  started  dating  the  most  popular  guy  in  school  ,  since  barb  vanished  and  she  got  lost  in  the  upside  down  (  the  first  person  after  will  and  barb  to  visit  )  .  nancy  can't  afford  to  show  anything  except  bravery  ,  and  she  definitely  can't  tell  her  little  brother  how  she  feels  ,  but  that's  no  different  than  usual  .  “  you're  not  scared  ,  are  you  ?  ”  @noreaturn  asks  .  with  a  shake  of  her  head  ,  and  her  gun  on  her  back  ,  she  jerks  her  head  towards  the  others  .  “  i'm  not  going  to  let  anything  happen  to  you  ,  i  never  will  .   come  on  ,   don't  want  to  get  left  behind   .  ”

❪ N. ❫ the stadium is alive. the air is pure, unstained by the taint of crimson and the overbearing scent of copper. every dead end hallway echoes with chatter from the adjoined. seattle's piss poured with endless bouts of rain but nora hasn't found a single person who has cared. the children come in with rain boots filled to the brim. parents smile with the luxury of ease. every now and again gunshots can be heard in the distance. even that sounds like peace. a small price to pry for the earnings.

"is this everything you thought it would be?" it wasn't salt lake that was for sure. it wasn't their families or the fireflies or the safety of everything they'd once known. but it was a light in the darkness. she thought they'd never find it. that there would always be dirt beneath the dirt, breathing it in -- CLAWING AT THROATS EVEN IN DEATH. it wasn't what they fought for, but it was what they were fighting for now. she kicks a pebble off the ridged roof. they're alone up here. high above everyone else. the dome perpetually half-open. teeth sink into inner cheek. from the dogs playing below she looks up to the sky, shoulders rising and falling with an inhale / exhale. "'cause i haven't made up my mind yet."

“ it's not as bad as it looks. tommy and joel are just making a big deal about it. ” she swears, but the hitch in tone gives. flesh tender still even days after and a reapplied salve. the skin is raw and raised, bright and unsightly in daylight. ellie expected @noreaturn to have questions, tommy helped to give her the time to settle into a story and not the truth.

she's made a habit of lying, one after another and she hates it. there's silence with her turning wrist, muscles tense and ready to pull back. she wonders if maria can see past it, the teeth marks that left behind something mutated, risen veins like a root system beneath the ground. when it's too much she's avoids looking herself.

“ it's also not anyones fault, ” she doesn't wait to let it be known it's too much, her arm is back in her possession and fingers begin the attempts of reapplying. her brows pinch at the struggle, the gauze too loose to provide the protection needed in it's fresh days of cellular reconstruction. “ i don't think i should be taken off duty either, if that's why you want to see me. ”
