These pictures above show the Normande, a breed a cattle native to (you guessed it) Normandy, and are common in Northern France. They are mostly known to be a dual-purpose breed, giving both wonderful milk higher in fat that is used to produce butter and cheeses, while also having a tasty marbled meat after slaughter. Sharing Viking heritage, these cattle are also known to be very hardy and can handle the winter cold pretty well, while also not requiring too much supplement into their feed as well and are usually easy on grass-fed diets.
They make great homestead cows (as long as the people have general large animal knowledge) concerning handling. But don’t ever turn your back on a cow!
I love reading about breeds on Tumblr, but could not find anything on these guys anywhere here. I know the information here is pretty brief, but please feel free to add or share anything else you may know! I find Normande cattle to be wonderful for farms and homesteads.
