Boredom
Fighting demons was not the biggest problem! All companions were brave people, tough and not fussy about giving out.
They were a motley crew from all over the world. None of them carried an easy lot. David's father would have called them all losers who did nothing with their lives although they had chances.
Made nothing of life? What a strange phrase...
David often thought about his parents. He was grateful to have had a good childhood.
He wondered what it was like with his companions. They didn't talk much about personal matters. And when they did, it was mostly melancholy flashbacks. But even in melancholy lies beauty and precious memories.
The Iron Bull had once spoken to Dorian about Tevinter. Somehow they had a lot in common. This was nice and good to know. Dorian often giggled when Bull spoke to him, they enjoyed teasing each other.
Blackwall and Sera were also a funny couple, they were direct, real, funny and truly unique.
And David? He would often just sit or stand and listen and laugh, staring and wondering or swallowing hard about their stories.
He was probably the most boring of them all, at least that's how it often seemed to him, but he couldn't and wouldn't pretend.
The Inquisitor came from an impoverished noble family, he was a simple man, a silent dreamer. Well, he also had stories to tell, he was not a young man anymore, but those were the normal events of the ongoing times in Thedas.
If there was a drought, he helped in the fields and when robbers came by, there were small fights.
If there were problems in Norrath, he fought with his friends against chimeras and giant cockatrices.
If there was a group of mercenaries, who should take care of law and order, David was with them and made peace.
If there was a small merry festivity, David was right in the middle of it and drunk himself into a stupor.
This made him happy, this was his normality. But was it enough to fascinate a person in such a way that they would stay with him in the end?
At the beginning, Dorian Pavus was often drinking alone in the tavern. There were also the funny people from the Chargers. It was super pleasant to talk to them. They were a great bunch!
Especially impressive was Krem. He could drink people under the table, he was intelligent and handsome.
And then there was the Iron Bull himself.
A Qunari!
This fact alone was reason enough to find him attractive.
But no, he was an absolute eye-catcher! Magnificent horns, scars, an eye patch, missing fingers, a voluminous pleasant voice. And not to forget his intelligence!
Trevelyan was sure one of the brightest minds he had ever met in his life was Solas. The elf once played a round of chess with Bull during a long walk. They just imagined everything - David almost lost his mind, that's how impressive this performance of his two companions was.
But there was no glamour, no pomp, no action-packed adventure in the Herald's past. And David felt he would never be able to give Dorian what he deserved...
One evening, they were all sitting together playing a little game of cards. It was a typical bluff game, pretending to have something in your hand that you didn't have. So it was luck and charisma that made you win or lose. It was a well-known game in Tevinter. Krem was a master at it and he was winning almost every single turn. Only Dorian could see through him most of the time, since he knew the rules and tricks as well as Krem knew them.
People laughed and played, cursed and drank, until late at night.
When almost everyone had disappeared, David and Dorian sat in a small dark corner of the tavern and talked.
"Tevinter would need people like Krem and the Chargers. Smart and cunning, strong and forward looking! Krem is originally from Tevinter and Bull was already in Minrathous. But Krem is prosecuted in Tevinter. I don't think he'd like to go back there..." Dorian took a big sip of wine from the cup in front of him.
"Already planning your return to the Imperium?" David asked quietly.
"No no. Not now! I'm needed here. Am I not?" Dorian looked straight into David's face.
Trevelyan nodded, and as there was no one else in the tavern, David put his head against Dorian's broad shoulder.
"What am I going to do with you, my dear Lord Inquisitor? You don't need me, but you can't do without me either, can you? It would be terribly boring without me, wouldn't it? Am I right or am I right? Tehehe..."
"Oh, Dorian..." Trevelyan sighed deeply.
And the mage leaned his head gently against that of his lover and said: "The world outside is really going crazy, but we two are doing quite well here at the moment, don't you think Amatus?"
And so they lingered a little longer until the innkeeper finally kicked them out of his pub.
