The Dreamyard, Unova Region
[process and details under cut!!]
First off, thank you to everyone who liked and reblogged the "original" painting!! So many people saw it, I think it was because Bulbapedia reblogged it?? I don't think I've ever had so many people see my art, it was amazing!!! (≧▽≦)
The Dreamyard has been one of my favorite video game locations for so long. It's so mysterious and beautiful. I also just love Game Freak's interpretation of my country, it's really charming and beautiful, and also a little hilarious sometimes. The Dreamyard stood out to me especially because it feels like a place I could find if I walk a mile from my backyard in real life. My own personal Dreamyard, if you will !!
But what I neglected to mention in that post was actually, that's not the first time I've painted the Dreamyard! I've repainted it every few years to see my progress, actually!
Haha, here's the first one, circa approximately 2016/2017?? It's definitely something. I was in like fifth or sixth grade at the time, and I was just beginning to understand the difference between watercolor and say tempra paint, haha! There definitely was an attempt here.
This one was done in maybe 2022? Again, can't quite remember. I'd grown a lot as an artist and tried to incorporate some new techniques, like using a yellow underpainting. I also didn't outline this one in pen. The foliage in the background has some funky textures which I like. I also didn't plan on incorporating Munna at first (mistake, I know) but then once I finished it, it just looked boring. It didn't have a focal point. SO I painted Munna on a separate piece of paper, cut her out, and taped her on LMAO
And here's the most recent repaint from early 2024, excluding the one I just did! Lots of big steps taken here. I switched to goache as a medium, switched to a horizontal format, COMPLETELY changed color palette, and also added in a little Purrloin! I really like this one, but I do have some issues with it. I think the horizontal format makes it feel way too open, like you're in a field instead of a forest. I also just don't like how I drew the plants, but I still think it was a huge improvement!
Aaaaand here's the most recent repaint! When gathering references I noticed that the Dreamyard has a ruined building with a blue tin roof, and I really wanted to include that this time. As well as some barrels. I still used goache, but I switched the color palette and went back to a vertical format which suits the roof hanging overhead. No Munna now (SORRY SORRY I'M SORRY MUNNA I MISS YOU) but there's a little Purrloin in the foreground! Once I'd gotten as far as I could with my goache, I then touched up the colors, values, and some details in ibispaint!
So ta da! Those are all my paintings of the Dreamyard! Thank you for reading, I hope you found my process and improvement interesting!! ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
Marion is done!! Meet Nym's brother, Marion Kraldir!!
AAAGHHHHHGHH I'M SO HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE THESE THREE DONE!! UNFORTUNATELY I really want to go back and edit Nym's bc he's no longer at a level of quality I'm happy with 😔
Marion was super fun to design but he also gave me hella trouble!! His proportions are very lean and smooth and lanky which was fun to draw. His scars were the first hurdle, I had no clue how to draw those, but I think they look alright! They were supposed to be centralized under where his clothes would be so they could be easily hidden.
His casual clothing came together pretty quickly, Ash provided me plenty of references and had a very clear idea for the interesting pattern on his cardigan, and I love how it turned out!
Both of his sets of armor gave me a LOT of trouble. The first one felt not detailed enough for a while, so I ended up splitting the top into a vest and undershirt then gave the vest a fun stellar pattern inspired by Eilistraee.
The second armor was SUPPOSED to be inspired by the Helldusk armor Marion usually wears, but it just didn't suit his design at ALL. SO! I designed his armor from scratch. I wanted it to feel very celestial and beautiful but still functional in a lot of ways, and I think I captured that well ^_^
Anyways I love Marion, I'd die for him 🥹
edit: I saw some reblogs that said "Eilistraee design" and I just wanted to clarify this isn't Eilistraee, I just tagged this as such bc he is a follower of hers and I drew a lot of inspiration from her motifs and lore when designing him!!
