The Last House in the North Loop
Once upon a time, the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis—primarily home to warehouses and industrial buildings (many now turned apartments and condos)—was also home to patches of single-family homes, schools, and churches. Nearly all of these were wiped out by the freeway and other development starting in the 1960s. But tucked in among factories, distribution centers, vacant lots, freeway overpasses and off-ramps, one house still stands. From what we can tell, 1022 5th Street North, built in 1914, is the last remaining house in the North Loop. The house is owned by a holding company that owns the entire block and was purchased, as part of the block, for $1.5 million in 2020. We suppose it’s only a matter of time before this house also disappears.

I usually have a couple of recipes and ideas in my blog queue for MONTHS, but I’m laughably behind now. I’m trying to enjoy the last bits of good weather and really concentrating on quality time with my family (i.e. eating take-out by the river) which is why you haven’t seen much from me. And with everything that’s going on in the news, I’m overwhelmed. It doesn’t mean that I will stay silent or passive: I just plan on channeling my energy into other places.
