The Polish War Memorial. On the corner of Northolt Airport, London. Every time I see this, it’s fascinating to remember the history. The British were absolutely beastly to them. Shameful. And then the Poles showed them by becoming the best fighter squadrons in the Battle of Britain. Without them, the UK would have lost the Battle of Britain. Here’s a stat: One British pilot was killed for every 4.9 enemy planes downed. The Poles managed to notch up 10.5 enemy planes per pilot death. And then after the war, the British treated them so badly that they weren’t even allowed to take part in the victory parades in London. Their pilots were seen weeping on the pavement at the slight. And as they didn’t want to live in the Stalinist hellhole that Poland had become, Labour MPs moaned and frowned. Not much has changed since then, has it? Sad. Very sad.
