Airlines used to give little badges or pins to any child flying. You didn't have to pay for it or anything, they would just give it to you and you would feel happy and proud and less scared of flying.

Postcard: Northwest Orient (Never Ontime) Airlines Stratocruiser, 1950s.

On 2 April 1956 one of these Boeing planes operating as NW 2 took off from SEA enroute to New York via Portland and Chicago.  A few minutes later it crashed into Puget Sound just off Maury Island. No one was killed at the time of the crash, but of the 32 passengers and 6 crew, four passengers and one cabin attendant died in the frigid waters of the Sound before rescue could be made, one of the worst air disasters in the PNW. The crash is among my most vivid memories from childhood as I was totally enamored of planes and flying, and the crash occurred just a few kilometers from where my family lived. I did not see it happen, of course, but there were lots of photos, and news coverage was extensive. For several years afterward, each time we passed SEA and a plane was taking off I wondered “will it crash too?”
