also in prep I’d told the anesthesiologist that I was pretty nervous, and I’m not sure if they just do this for everyone but she did such a good job of helping me relax. she suggested putting the IV in earlier to get it out of the way so I could stop thinking about it, and it was really good advice because it really was painless when she inserted it.

when it was time for surgery she asked if I wanted a relaxant in the prep area and the nurse said it would feel great like having a couple big glasses of wine, and I remember her asking while I was being wheeled to the OR if I felt it yet and I said I didn’t think so, but in retrospect I was super calm (I was sort of nervous laughing at things they were saying) so it probably was.

getting onto the operating table they said to think of where you could be if you could be anywhere and I said “with my cat!” and everyone went “awwww” and they asked his name, and I told them Dudley and that he was a 9-year old tabby, then they put oxygen mask on and the last thing I remember is them saying that my deep breaths were really great and that was it!

You got a nose job? What’s happening I missed some important context

septoplasty! so not for aesthetics just for function of breathing, it got so bad over the last 18 months that I had zero airflow in one nostril and maybe 50% in the other so I have to breathe through mouth and have been getting really poor sleep etc.

they also removed some tissue in the nose called turbinates which in some people swell and cause issues with airflow.

a lot of the time for septoplasty they can work with the existing cartilage in the nose but mine needed so much correction they needed to harvest a 2.5 inch section of cartilage from my rib and use that to reconstruct, the ENT I saw wasn’t comfortable doing that so I got referred to a ENT/plastic surgeon who does more complex cases.

he said that my nose skin is also quite thick and it it was more average thickness I would have had a much more noticeably crooked nose but my thick skin hid it a bit (although my nose was definitely crooked).

although it’s not for aesthetics he said that my nose probably will look more symmetrical, but also will be a bit wider in the middle and bits of the nose that were soft before (like tip of nose) will now feel firmer.

the funny side story is that I’m deeply skeptical of most American doctors (although my PCP is American and she’s actually the best doctor I’ve never had) and I was intentionally looking for non-American trained doctors. The ENT I saw from my PCP referral was Italian/Swiss, and the plastics guy he referred me to is Canadian and I discovered he went to high school in Montreal with him :)

the FAQ for correcting deviated septum says that it does change the shape of your nose but these before and after pics are bonkers
