Advice for Remy, Day 28. Don't make all your photos selfies. It’s nice to have some photos of yourself, of course. There’s nothing quite like looking back on past you, seeing how much you’ve changed, how youthful you used to be and how little grey you used to have. But trust me when I say this – and I mean it from the bottom of my heart - nobody will care about your selfies. Nobody. And that includes Future You. Future You will curse Past You for filling your photo albums, phone memory and social media feed with endless photos of your own pouting face (no doubt in exactly the same pose. Every. Single. Time.) serving only to obscure every background detail. Future You would love to see that place you went to on holiday when you were 14 – but can’t, as Past You is blocking it, trying to look moody and like an Instagram model. Future You wonders what that view was like from that spectacular beach you went to on your honeymoon, but will never know, as Past You was more obsessed with his own face, in ultra closeup, with a filter to make you look thinner and younger. Again, let me stress, there’s nothing wrong with a few selfies – I’m certainly guilty of that myself from time to time. But as you get older you want to be able to see the places you went to, the things you did, the people you spent time with – not just endless picture after picture after picture of your own face, in one long narcissistic collage. Short of making a pretty cool ageing timelapse there’s no excuse. Don’t be that person who goes on the holiday of a lifetime, trekking to Machu Picchu, or climbing to the base camp of Everest, or wandering the lonely beaches of Thailand, only to come back with 500 photos – 450 of which are of your own face in various states of suntan/frostbite/Snapchat filter. It’s not an appealing trait to be so obsessed with your own face that it’s all you ever want to take photos of. That’s what pets are for.
