kaigaku only wanted to survive. sorta huge rant under the cut, i saw a kaigaku hate tiktok and got so mad that i started pouring my heart out here i dunno..

kaigaku stole money to feed himself, to clothe himself, and still drank muddy water to keep himself alive. he was driven out by the other orphans and only offered them up to the demon at all, because otherwise that demon would have killed and eaten him. that was obviously not the best option, for someone who only really wanted to stay alive.

wouldn't you do the same in his situation, only wanting to survive and not knowing how else to ensure your life? kaigaku was a child, he was a scared kid fending for himself with absolutely no guidance or help before jigoro came along and took him in.

kaigaku isn't selfish, he just has a skewed perception of safety. in my head, he thinks that if he relies on others, then he might go soft and not be able to fend for himself if he's left alone again. even when confronted by kokushibo, he only kneels before the demon and lets himself be turned into one because he doesn't want to die.

and EVEN THEN, if kaigaku hadn't turned the demon to the temple with the orphans, gyomei wouldn't have killed that demon and learned his own strength, and he wouldn't have become a demon slayer. many, many more lives would have been lost if gyomei hadn't become a demon slayer, he was the one to save shinobu and kanae from the demon that killed their parents so they would be dead too, and the demons might have even won the final battle without gyomei.

anyway, there is a common theme here, with kaigaku's self-preservation instincts.

must i remind you that he grew up on the streets, with nobody to keep him safe, before gyomei took him in and after he left, before he met jigoro? he didn't learn any better, he doesn't know any other way to survive than to prioritize himself.

"there is no shame in kneeling before someone with overwhelming strength. as long as you stay alive, it will work out somehow. until you die, you haven't lost. you may rub your face in the dirt… you may lose your home or drink muddy water… people may curse you for stealing money… but as long as you live on… …you can win someday. you will win. i have moved forward with that belief." -- kaigaku himself, chapter 145 - "box of happiness"

people mischaracterize him so bad and water him down to some selfish asshole who did what he did out of hatred and not desperation. he's just a misguided kid who probably didn't fully grow up mentally and has a skewed survival instinct because he was forced to fend for himself at such a young age. he pushed everyone away so he wouldn't learn to rely on them, he was living the only way he knew how.

he wanted to be the best, to win, and he was doing it in his head. he thought he was was better than everyone else when he became a demon, muzan and kokushibo also likely told him so to inflate his ego and get him to become more powerful.

the quote for kaigaku in the official fanbook is actually "the thunder breathing successor who lost his way in search of praise"

which implies that he was being at least somewhat praised for getting stronger as a demon. he even says he only served people who knew his worth, further implying the praise thing, because why else would he "not care about anyone who doesn't value him"? muzan is the type to take advantage of that anyway, so it makes sense.

it genuinely makes me so mad when people hate on kaigaku and mischaracterize him for no reason, they just can't stand to see a guy winning in life (at least for his standards of winning.) or they're heavy zenitsu stans and hate anyone who did anything to their precious yellow guy.

this isn't hating on zenitsu either, i love zenitsu just as much as the next guy and even started out hating kaigaku because of how mean he was to poor zenitsu.. but i know how to read, i'm autistic but i'm not fucking stupid, so i quickly realized that kaigaku acted as mean as he did because he didn't know any other way to be.

have we ever seen kaigaku with a genuine smile on his face, without that furrowed brow of his? i don't think so.

he might not know how to let himself feel really happy, as zenitsu said, "you were never satisfied. the box in your heart that contains happiness has a hole in it. happiness is constantly spilling out. if you don't find that hole and plug it... ...you'll never be satisfied."

at this point, even zenitsu, the one who kaigaku personally antagonized the most, understands kaigaku better than the kaigaku haters. be more like zenitsu, be understanding and try to see it from the perspective of a kid trying to survive, of someone who doesn't know any other lifestyle.

tl;dr, kaigaku basically caused the demon slayers to win the final battle because of his interaction with gyomei's backstory, and mischaracterization sucks.
