Hot take: The people who've criticized the II movie "ruining" characters and/or their arcs just dislike the fact that the characters aren't acting the way they want. Someone has said before that the lack of an update from Season 2 for so long can give people a chance to headcanon a character so much that the character becomes not The Character.
The II movie isn't the problem. It's your personal view of the character that is.
