ngl sometimes i feel almost nostalgic for 90s/early-2000s fatphobia, especially the way it was presented in popular media, because it operated with a degree of honesty. fat is unattractive. lose weight to be hotter. be thin and fuckable. that kind of stuff. now it's all about health and wellness and self-care, and the rhetoric surrounding body size has been so sanitized that it sounds almost not dehumanizing. except the same social hierarchy is still there, only less visible. it's fucking insidious. of course that "honesty" came with a lot of normalized harm, and i like to believe that the shift in framing has helped to reduce weight stigma overall, but... sometimes i just get so fed up with wellness culture and the way it rewards the same old ideals. like, if you want to sell me weight loss junk, just go ahead and call me a fat pig who can't get laid.
