14. what's a hobby you'd like to get into?

I've always wished that I could sing.

But as far as something that I still have time to get into, I'd love to have a go at historic interpretation. My favorite eras are Stuart and Tudor, and also Victorian seems very fun. I already like to cook old recipes, and the idea of really living like our ancestors is fascinating to me. I am slightly anxious about dipping my toe into that because I know that Black historic interpreters who interpret the African American slave experience get treated in pretty odious ways sometimes. Cheyney McKnight has said that white Civil War interpreters have asked her to reenact whippings and other abuse, so I'm sure that Black people of color in Stuart, Tudor, or Victorian reenactments have been asked to do equally unacceptable things. And y'all know me - I will cuss a bitch out over some shit like that. But I love medieval clothing and am determined to own a true chemise one of these days. Who knows, I may end up interpreting one day too. Fingers crossed!

23. what's the coolest place you've visited?

I haven't traveled very widely at all in my life - well, not in the way that most people mean when they talk about being well-traveled. I only traveled out of the country for the first time ever in September of last year, but I don't think that London can take my "coolest place ever visited" award. It was awesome, yes, but not nearly as cool as the income-sharing commune where I did my undergraduate internship. My twin was a member at the time and I missed them, so the commune was an easy pick. It was bucolic as all fucken get out - we had a dairy herd and that meant plenty of fresh milk, cheese, and butter, as well as the brightest of red meat I'd ever seen in my life. We also made our own tofu in like a billion different styles and flavors. The cooks made granola by the five gallon bucket! I'll never forget the peanut butter, carob, and ginger granola. When I left I snuck a big bag out of there with me.

The foundations of the governing principles were egalitarianism and socialism, but of course it wasn't perfect by any stretch. There were creeps and bullies and narcissists and sex pests a'plenty. But still, NYE 2006 might have been the best party night of my life. I started the evening in the sauna with at least twenty other people, did my first and only cold plunge ever into the pond, and before I went to the big party I went up to one of the cow pastures to look at the moon because it was a full moon and it had a halo that night. I'll never forget the sight!

abroad abroad abroad. I know there’s tons of places around here that I haven’t seen but it ain’t a proper vacation unless I’ve left the country.
