what’s your native language? when did you start with english? what lang do you think should be used for schools/universities? (sorry the linguist will be quiet now)

what do you mean by “native language”? if you mean the language of my home country, it’s filipino. but if you mean the language i’m more comfortable in, it’s english. (this isn’t uncommon; i know many other people here whose “first” language is english). i vaguely remember speaking mostly in filipino as a very young kid, but when i entered preschool teachers started talking to me in english so i guess i picked it up at a critical time.

as for what language should be used, i don’t fully know, to be honest. currently they’re trying out mother tongue-based multilingual education, where the early education is in the child’s native tongue (be it filipino or cebuano or ilocano or even english), then a few grades in they introduce filipino (if not native) and english. i think it’s great, but so far it’s only limited to the early grade levels. and i honestly don’t know how things will work at the tertiary education level, considering that universities have students from all over the country with different mother tongues.

i understand diphtongs a bit different, give a word for an example?

so like the word “I” is essentially just made up of the English diphthong that kids learn is called the “long i” sound. (each vowel has a “long” and “short” sound and long a, i, and o are diphthongs.) so this is the transcription I learned in a previous class:

I ---> aj

bite ---> bajt

bait ---> bejt

boat ---> bowt

but this class was weird and I think I remember the prof saying something about how transcriptions norms have changed from this? so I was wondering if anyone more familiar with ipa could tell me how they transcribe diphthongs.
