BAHOREL’S LAUGHING MISTRESS
Okay so I was originally planning to make a huge deal of this and do more research but I can’t wait any longer. this is FÉLICITÉ otherwise known as BAHOREL’S LAUGHING MISTRESS. Félicité is, admittedly, a name I made up, but otherwise she is a canon female character from the Brick who would make a totally logical addition to any modern update of les amis de l’ABC who we have nevertheless allowed to languish in obscurity. quelle tragedie!
Headcanons for canon era Félicité: a grisette who was partially deafened when a gun was fired too close to her ear, she covers for any gaps in her hearing by laughing prettily and smiling like she knows something you don’t. She was drawn to Bahorel because of his booming voice, expressive lips, and expansive hand gestures.
side note: Bahorel in this headcanon is one or two generations away from someone of Haitian extraction, and much of his love of revolution is inspired not just by the French revolution, but also by the Haitian slave revolts.
Notes on modern era Félicité: By the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the name “Félicité” has given way to the modern version Félicié, and I picture Félicié as being Vietnamese, anything from a recent immigrant struggling to learn both French and French Sign Language simultaneously to someone whose family immigrated to France prior to World War I – take your pick.
