Notebook #5
Reflection on the Creation of the ZINE Project
This project allowed me the opportunity to explore my family’s heritage and connect with my grandparents. I have always been interested in the unique struggles of immigrants in this country, but I never realized how many members of my own family have experienced those struggles. Learning more about where my family comes from and everything that they’ve been through in their lives was a very moving experience for me, and it made this project that much more personal and meaningful.
Beyond the anecdotal aspect of the notebooks, the research into the history of immigration and the creation of the final zine project was surprisingly interesting. I never truly grasped just how unsettling the culture shock must be for foreign immigrants in the US until now, and I have found myself having significantly more respect for those who have braved all of those roadblocks to make their new life here regardless.
