Farewell to outgoing President Barack Obama.
As we bid a fond farewell to outgoing President Barack Obama, I’d like to take a few minutes to reflect on what the last eight years have meant. Whatever your politics are and/or your feelings about the job President Barack Obama did (both within the United States and with respect to foreign affairs), one thing everyone can agree on is that he conducted himself with class and dignity.
This was obvious from day one of his first term as president of the United States, however, it became more blatant when it looked as though his antithesis, Donald Trump, was gaining in popularity. From the early days of Trump’s campaign, he went for the jugular as he ran a campaign based on hate and tacky behavior. His disparaging comments about Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Latinos, Muslims, African Americans, Hispanics, women, veterans and disabled people have most people shaking their heads asking, “is this behavior really becoming of a president?”
Is there a demographic of people Trump hasn’t insulted?
The disdain Trump has expressed for everyone who isn’t White and male is shocking enough but that this person was not only running for president of a country but that he took the lead and was eventually elected left jaws hanging open. Leaving aside that it’s truly difficult to understand what he ran his platform on (excuse me but shouting “Make America Great Again!” over and over isn’t a platform but rather it makes him look like an out-of-control two-year-old child) other than hate, it’s difficult to ignore the tackiness and classlessness with which he has expressed his hatred.
Those who opposed President Barack Obama at every turn (I am referring to voters as well as the United States Senate and Congress) did so solely because of his race. While many argue it was his policies, this is hogwash because nearly all of his policies—both foreign and domestic—mirror those of his predecessors. So it could only be race behind the depictions of him as an ape, and people calling him derogatory names to his face, in print and online news media and on social media.
Despite how often President Barack Obama was insulted, his moves obstructed and his family’s life was under a microscope, he held his head high and faced them with dignity.
By contrast, Donald Trump is rude, trashy, tacky and again, he acts like an out-of-control two-year-old child. And today, January 20, 2107, he will be inaugurated the United States’ 45th president.
But we have a voice. While many freely express their thoughts by saying, #NotMyPresident, you can say more. Alex and I encourage you to share your thoughts and feelings about this or any other topic. Your voice means something. Your artistic expression means something. If you are part of the Multiracial Community, we want to hear from you. Donald Trump may want to shut his many, many detractors down and act like a child, but you don’t have to allow it. Be heard. Use our submission form to have your voice heard and to express yourself. While many are (understandably) blacking out their Facebook profile pictures, take a different approach. Don’t be silenced.
