Continued from here.
Helena snorted, choking back a growl. She saw Sarah’s eyes rolling and nearly copied her, but then, she stopped. Maggie had tried, more than once, to teach her how people’s faces talked to each other. It hadn't really helped--most of the time, she could only make her face say Nothing and the rest of the time it did what it wanted to--but the list of Rules Maggie gave her, about what other people’s faces said, did help. When she remembered them. What Sarah had done--rolling her eyes--Maggie had labeled Rude/Don’t Do This. Maggie was gone, but the voice that talked like her and lived in Helena’s head wasn't.
So, she scowled at the floor--because that was not Rude, because she was not looking at Sarah, thst was only Angry, because she was looking at the floor. She wanted to say I-love-you-do-you-love-me and I'm-not-a-baby and I-will-be-good-please-don't-leave-me-again, but she didn't. Maggie’s a Rules never had helped her figure out when her words were Rude or Polite, and when she guessed, us-ual-ly, she was wrong. So, she said, “Okay, sestra, whatever you say,” because agreeing, she knew, was safe. Us-ual-ly, “Where are we going?” She asked, because sometimes, questions were, too.
