She left footnotes in the book of my memory. Every time I re-read it a new interpretation appears, like invisible ink revealed with lemon, some of them sting. Slowly I am beginning to edit. Some of the pages are filled with nostalgia and warmth. Others are stained and smeared with tear drops. She left footnotes in my memory before I ever left any of my own. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to see the reality of her part in the story.
