Why Alex Day probably shouldn't have made that video
Before I inevitably get torn to pieces by a group of people proclaiming me to be an SJW (a term I'd honestly like to see eradicated, since it basically seems to be another version of Godwin's Law), I'd just like to explain why I don't think he should have made that video. Potential trigger warnings below.
Alex left the community abruptly after the accusations were made and he half-heartedly admitted to them, omitting numerous details. I understand that he might not have wanted to address the situation immediately and get his thoughts together, but waiting around six months to address the issue has led to several "too little too late" comments, to quote loosely. The fact that he chooses to return now, after Sam Pepper, veeoneeye and a few smaller names have been accused is also something that I don't approve of; while it may be coincidence, I feel that it's something of a tasteless time. Granted, no time would have been perfect, but now feels especially bad, irrespective as to whether or not one views it as deliberate.
People are implying that by criticising Alex's video, we're hypocrites because we subscribed. This is not strictly true; while some probably are, it spread via word of mouth and some chose to watch it through the other upload, read the transcript or just found it through social media.
While he nominally has a right to free speech, he shouldn't complain about oppression and then filter comments out. I can only imagine various names that will be filtered and swept under the rug. This is not something you do if you want to start a conversation, and it honestly doesn't convince me that he's ready to return, if he ever will be.
There is not a real apology in the video. I have read the transcript and seen the mirror upload, and while he briefly dwells into two situations there were several other instances that he did not bring up, such as Lex. I don't want a video with every example broken down in explicit detail, but I feel that could have been handled better.
Alex does have the option of lurking on YouTube; he would always have the option of making a new channel, subbing anonymously to various YouTubers and things he likes. Instead, he chooses to comment and post as himself, which just doesn't seem wise.
If Alex has admitted to doing some of the things he was accused of, why was there nothing indicating that the victims deserved support? All I see now are fans angrily victim blaming, something that pisses me off no end. Saying that they can simply avoid triggers by not watching the video is fucking abominable, to boot; has it occurred to nobody that messages like "ALEX MADE A VID HAVE YOU SEEN IT" might be enough?
Regardless as to whether or not his intentions were pure, Alex Day has left yet another mark on the YouTube community. This is why I feel he would be wiser not to return.
Watched the video now (cause I'm a nosey bugger) and just a few things. 1. Don't watch the video without ad-block. I don't trust a man who hid from the Internet for 6 months because I'd rape alienations to handle money very well (or to actually donate that money as he said he would) 2. He is not apart of the YouTube community. The YouTube community does not deserve to be dragged through the mud along with you. 3. Tumblr isnt at fault here. You are. We listened to him butch about how awful tumblr is enough back in his heyday, what we're looking for now is an apology. 4. The fact he only discussed the lest serious and most easily misunderstood allegations I'd the most blatant and disgusting tactic I've ever seen. 5. Mentioning various girls names who were brave enough to come forward (especially Lindsay, someone we know from his videos) is a pitty technique. So is saying he knows who the anonymous girls are. We know you know who they are, what THEY need is an apology too. My boyfriend came in as u watched the video (a re-post so he doesn't even get the veiw) and asked if I think he did it and I truly do. I also do not believe he's learned. Yeah, he seems like he's trying to be better but this video is 6 months too late and about 5000 apologies too short. All he did was try and shunt the blame off of himself and yell about Tumblr for 30 minutes. He didn't mention the actual rape allegations or address the cheating allegations, not even to say he didn't do them. Make Alex Day aware he is not welcome. He is not in our community and his behaviour will not be tolerated. Maybe one day, when he's all grown up and can deal with addressing the serious allegations thrown at him without openly being passive aggressive and/or mocking then maybe we'll accept him. But right now he is not welcome and this is #NotThePast.
If its painful for me that Alex Day has uploaded a new video I can't even imagine what it's like for his victims.
Looking forward to what lies ahead. YES
