Materialistic- How stuff defines us as an individual.

In the novel "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk, the character The Narrator illustrates being materialistic at the beginning  of the novel. He speaks about all of the things that he posses in his appartment and how it sets him apart from everyone else. He also speaks about how much they cost as if trying to brag about of the things that he has.

I hate when people say " Always be your true self. people like it when you're being your true self." and they go all hypocritical because they aren't being their true self. Like really?!? what a wonderful piece of advice you just gave because you are doing the exact opposite of what you just told me. Wow have a wonderful life.
