Dystopian Friction- dysfunctional, no freedom, and things are created they are not made by nature.

"So, you'd need more sick people. Or else-- and it might be the same thing-- more diseases...."They're creating them (Atwood, 2004, p. 211)."

In the novel "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood, both protagonist Jimmy (Snowman) and Crake are talking about about the different diseases that people are making and insert into vitamins, then they make a cure and sell it to these people. This show how they are not in such a perfect world  Because why kill off your own people for control or money.

Hierarchy- ranking system of powerful elites

In the novel "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood, the character Crake has created this group of people that are his followers and will do what ever he says because they do not know any better. Crake has created this system that puts him at the top of the food chain  and he has gotten to the top primarily because of his schooling.

BlyssPluss Pill- Controls population, eliminates mortality, and diseases

"Which had led to the concept....could prolong youth (Atwood, 2004, p. 294)."

In the novel "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood, Crake creates this pill that is suppose to give people this immortality like power (so they think). But what they do not know is that by the time they reach 30 years old they will all of a sudden die and the purpose is to make people not affraid of death and live life to the fullest because they can not get and deaseas and they will only live until the age of 30.

God Complex- God like attitude about yourself, thinking you are privilege or unbeatable

"With the BlyssPlus Pill the human race will have a better chance of swimming (Atwood, 2004, p. 295)."

In the novel "Oryx and Crake" by Margaret Atwood, the protagonist Crake is trying to develop this pill that will give him the role of god. This pill will allow him to control the population of the world an at what age a person would die. By Crake being able to control these things it will give him god like powers.

Pseudo Individualism- Think you are an individual when in reality you are not.

The character The Narrator in the novel  "Fight Club" by  Chuck Palahniuk, thinks that he is an individual and that he has control over the things in his life, but when in reality he does not. He has to make up another person to handle some situation that he is not able to handle because he is to scare to take care on his own. This shows that he is relient on someone else which proves that he is not an individual.

Cultural Identity- External Stereotypes

In the novel "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight In Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, they were many characters that were trying to hind their true self. They were trying to determine whether or not live in their tribes was the best decision for them based on the stereotypes that were made by the outside world. The thing about these stereotypes were that most of the people in these reservations made them true and lived up to them. A lot of people in trying to find who they truly were just ended up consuming a large amount of alcohol and instead of finding who they truly were, they just lost themselves and accepted defeat.

Empathy- Think of other people emotionally.

"At almost every meeting since then, Big Bob has made me cry (Palahniuk, 1995, p. 9)".

In the novel "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk, the Narrator expresses his empathy for Big Bob by truthfully crying every time he heard on of Big Bobs stories about his testicular cancer and kids not speaking to him. This shows a softer side of the narrator and not just this materialistic person like he is portrait to be in the beginning of the novel.

Materialistic- How stuff defines us as an individual.

In the novel "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk, the character The Narrator illustrates being materialistic at the beginning  of the novel. He speaks about all of the things that he posses in his appartment and how it sets him apart from everyone else. He also speaks about how much they cost as if trying to brag about of the things that he has.

Emasculation- When a man is unable to provide for his family/ when a men's testis are removed.

In the novel "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk we meet a character by the name of Big Bob. Big Bob was previous emasculated literally ad figuratively, and know feels like he is alone in the world and has no one to talk to. After being emasculated he loses his family and his kids will not talk to him. He feels that he is less of a man because he has lost his testis and the ability to provide for his family.

Individuality- Fending/ being an individual.

"There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself (Chopin, 1894, p. 281)."

In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard is so used to being a part of her husband and always doing what he wanted, that when she hears that he has died, she is more happy then sad because she knew that she got her individuality back. Now she is going to live for herself and no one else.

Yellow- It symbolizes death, sickness, jaundice, being in a cage.

"The color is repellent, almost revolting: a smoldering unclean yellow (Gilman, 1892, p. 35).

The representation of the color yellow in this short story is not a very pleasant one. This person spent so much time in this yellow room that it made her more sick then what she really was.

Allegories- Objects, characters, plots, and motives that represent large social and moral ideas.

"Splashing and paddling with hoofs of a goat and breaking the golden lilies afloat (Browning, 1860, p. 12)."

This is a symbolic representation of destruction. In the whole poem the author uses these symbolic representations to symbolize destruction, love, and life.

Paternal Dominance- People tell you to do something they think it's in your best interest.

This is a parent that while in another country had an affair. The outcome of that affair was having a child. Now he is trying to do the right thing by raising this child. The father is attempting to control her by telling her when to take her medicine and what to take. She does not like this, but the father is doing it for her own good.

The Other- A person who does not fit into dominant society.

The short story "Paul's Case" by Willia Cather, illustrates the the meaning of being an outcast with the main character Paul. Paul was a boy who was misunderstood and did not fit in with society and because of this he was pretty much shunned. He just wanted to be in a place were he could feel excepted and love, but he was also the type of boy that would push people away that would try and help him and he did not like to work for what he wanted. He wanted everything given to him.

Fluidity- Shifting, changing mutability.

"believe that even in my deliberateness i was not deliberate (Brooks, 1963, p. 284)"

The quot above tells that the mother of the child that was aborted's decision was not certain when she made the decision of aborting the child. The mother had mixed feelings about the decision that she wanted to take with keeping or aborting her child. She aborted her child and in the story it shows that she truly had mixed feelings about what actions she wanted to take.

Absolutism- Without a doubt, fixed idea or concern.

The short story "The Oval Portrait" by Edgar Allan Poe best portraits absolutism, "Long-long i read-and devoutly, devotedly I gazed".... This short quot tells how the person is so devoted and so fixed on this idea of capturing the girls beautifuly that he does not keep track of the time. It shows that his devotion leads to the girls death, because he was fixed on the portrait that he paid no attention about her well being.

Voice- A space for yourself, speaking out about your ideas, and boosting your opinion.

"But life with baby wears on me. Nursing in the middle of the night in the dark, glasses off, all is a blur (Panning, p.285)"

The mother is voicing her opinions about how hard life is with a new born child and how she wishes that it was not as hard. After being away from her child on vacation, her opinions change. She realizes that she misses him and that she does not want to be away from him.
