I love rose bushes! I always have since we had them when I was a kid! I have planted 4 at my house a few years ago, and 3 have floursished! The rose is from my front yard! Then, a random plant started growing in my back yard against my house this year. I thought it was a weed or tree I would have to cut down! Low and behold, I looked at it today, and it has two flowers on it! My neighbor had planted Morning Glory bushes in our front yard as a border between our houses! They are gorgeous! So, we thought we’d start familiarizing you all with what most people call weeds, but we call medicine. I’ve been amazed at how much of this information has been lost in such a short amount of time. Only as far back as my grandparents was this a common practice, and to think in only 2 short generations it’s like an endangered species. My dad’s grandparents had a farm in rural Pennsylvania. My mom’s grandparents came to America from Calabria, Italy with her father in tow. I’ve heard stories from both of them about how Gramma picked dandelions from the yard in spring for salads. Or how Bannie and Grandad never went to the doctor because they took care of everything with folk medicine. Now, I am in no way suggesting to never go to the doctor. What I am suggesting is that we all get back in touch with what is given to us for nourishment. It’s time to bring this lost knowledge back. Everything we need is given to us. We just need to remember our relationship with our plant allies. Remember their names. Remember what they look like, and where to find them. We’ll be posting about a new plant friend regularly, and get you reacquainted with them.
