Time for Action
I couldn't have picked a better day to start blogging about Sousse. While this afternoon my biggest concern was on how to finish my thesis on time and finding ways to protect my gear against the sand of the Sahara dessert, one of the other Nour participants just shared the horrible news on the Nour page that there have been 27 people killed in Sousse today.
According to BBC, 28 people, mainly from Tunisia, Germany, Great Brittain and Belgium have been killed. Yet another terroristic attack on Tunisia, the after the Bardo Museum...
My colleague, who is already there, said in a reaction to the news:
"I was about to visit Sousse this afternoon... The attack is sickening and a punch in the face of all those people who are working incredibly hard to pathen the way to democracy and human rights here. (...) To all those who are planing to come to Tunisia, please evaluate the situation carefully in the next few days. But also please give it a chance, since terrorism aims at deterrence at the first place. Dont be irresponsible, but also dont give those sick fucks power over you!"
I will keep track of the situation, but hidden underneath umbrella's, guns will be dificult to distinguish in any way, and I'm not planning to be on the lookout for shooters the whole time. The plan for this summer is to visit Tunisia for two months, in order to show a little bit of the reality in this country. I hope to be able to get to the people and find out how they feel about life in general, the current situation and how this all affects their day to day life during this summer. In the mean time, I will work on a project called We love Sousse, which is a project aimed at community development and participation in society.
Only last week I became fully aware of the fact that Sousse is actually one of the biggest resort sites of North-Africa, so it looks like this is not going to be the kind of Indiana Jones-setting I was hoping for the most of my days.
Still, I feel like there's a lot of surprises awaiting me at the other side of the Meditteranean...
Project Magreb
Ahlan, welcome to Project Magreb. This summer I will be updating you on issues occurring in the Magreb Region (North-Africa, for the nitwits, check it out on Google Maps) in the line of the Nour Project.
Together with 30 other very nice people I have the chance to shed a little light (Nour) on a region that is often shown in a negative of critical way. My goal is to... just go there and see what life is actually like! ~ from a decent biased western point of view, obviously...
I will record the life of both the tourists here, and the ‘local people’, the Tunisians. I hope to participate in their society and share beautiful, inspiring, scary?, weird, unusual or heartwarming experiences with the people of Tunisia. Of course, we all know Tunisia as a touristic destination and from the news of the attack on the Bardo Museum two months ago, but I’m sure there will be a lot more to discover.
If you want to find out more about the people that live on the other side of the mediterranean, or just like to follow my wicked adventures, then feel free to check out this blog from time to time. I’ll try, I repeat, try to keep this up-to-date..
Of course, I will also provide you with footage and reports of random things, let’s not make things more boring than necessary :)
The last couple of months I have been receiving some training at the faculty of theology in Utrecht, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, de Baak Zeist and have had some readings by Jan Eikelboom, Rena Netjes and other interesting folks, which should make me completely up for the task. We’ll see about that..
