For those who are into Science Fiction, there is actually a book titled ‘The Blade Runner’ by Alan E. Nourse.  It is unrelated to the ‘Blade Runner’ movies which are based on Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? which I have not had a chance to read but seems good.

The book is unique, at least to me, in Science Fiction for focusing so little on the ‘science fiction’ and more on the practical aspects of health care in a very unequal society.  The world is somewhat unremarkable compared to our own (or even the world in 1974 when it was written). The duel protagonists, an aging, society-accepted doctor and a petty criminal outsider, make for a perspective that is a welcome break from stories that focus on fantastical elements and bold heroes.

It’s a bit hard to track down a copy (at least it was for me ten years ago) but its well worth a read.
