The last five days had passed by in a blur that Dawn didn’t want. Everything felt wrong. Hollie would be over the next day, but she had no idea what that would lead to. The whispers seemed to follow her everywhere, or at least, her own paranoia made her believe they were. Trainings were tense, no one knowing if they’d even be allowed to continue playing. Her sessions with Charlotte were spiralling back in the opposite direction, most of the progress she had made dissolving. She couldn’t face going home, so she hadn’t even seen her family since the news broke.
So that’s why she was here. At the arcade, standing in front of the dance machine, Benjy at her side. She was good at pretending she was fine. That there wasn’t a tornado roaring inside her. But she still needed a distraction, a day off, and ever since the masquerade, he had taken a seat at the table that was the forefront of her mind. So she’d reached out.
They’d already been there long enough to play a few games, all of which she had won, when Dawn began to drag him over to it. “No, no, don’t make that face. I know you can dance. It’ll be fun.”
