What is the history of the Novosibirsk Ballet School? Do you know how it came to be?
The academy was founded in December 1956 to train future dancers for NOVAT (Novosibirsk State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet), which opened its doors in 1945. The theatre’s original company was made up of VBA and BBA graduates but it eventually needed a dedicated training base to ensure its survival and future. The academy was meant to link up with NOVAT (as well as other Siberian theatres) the same way BBA and VBA link up with the Bolshoi and the Mariinsky respectively.
It’s interesting to note that the academy was opened in a series of buildings that oiginally housed the Novosibirsk orphanage, and some of its first students were the children from this facility.
The first group of dancers graduated in 1965 and went on to be fairly successful (many of them became People’s Artists of Russia and Honoured Artists of Russia). As the teachers for the academy were sources largely from NOVAT itself, most of them were either BBA or VBA trained.
Semyon Chudin is probably the academy’s most well-known graduate.
Here are videos from Alisa Nikiforova’s (one of the academy’s leading specialists and teachers) 1988 class at the academy. :
P.S.: I’m very sorry for the embarrasingly long time it took me to respond to this question :(
