My office this week, part 2: Had the pleasure of collaborating with Andew Penner for a cabaret at Soulpepper. (If you don't know Andrew, he's a wonderfully creative musician - check out his work with Sunparlor Players and Harrow Fair.) We played a bunch of his tunes last night, but interspersed them with recordings and loops - everything from field recordings of preachers to J Dilla beats. It was a really incredible night of musical communication and improvisation - a sort of modern chamber music. My setup consisted of my trusty Yamaha Club Custom kit and Akira Jimbo signature snare, plus a 10" snare and an old vintage Ludwig snare tuned down super low. Decided to experiment a bit and mix and match cymbals, so my setup consisted of Dream Dark Matter hats, Sabian Jack DeJohnette Encore signature crash, a dream 8"/10" splash stack, Zildjian 22" K Medium Dark Ride, Ufip 18" Clash Crash and a Soultone "extreme" flat ride. Lots of small percussion things two including the wicked Dream Re-FX rings and many shakers and bells. Also played piano for one tune, but played some synth stuff using a small Akai midi controller running the Novation Launchkey App, into a boss RC-50 loop pedal.
