Definitely one of the more unusual theatre gigs I’ve done: “Into the Woods”...in the woods (Springwater Provincial Park to be exact). I re-orchestrated the percussion book to make it sound a little bit more folk-y/organic (and also because I had to move all the gear into place every show, so the xylo, timps, chimes, crotales all got cut). The cast was fantastic, and it’s always a treat to work with musical director and good friend @wayneofgwillimbury (who is also theatre’s most stylish electric unicyclist). The weather gods smiled upon us and we even got a nice write up in the Globe from @jkelly028b. It was SO NICE TO PLAYING A MUSICAL WITH REAL LIVE HUMANS (yes I’m shouting because I feel very strongly about it). Had a lot of fun playing City of Angels at @randolphcollegeto the past couple of weeks. Nice to play in a pit band with a horn section (haven’t done that in a while) and very fun to dig into some big band stuff again. This is a short clip of the exit music taken from my monitor mix. We’re all wearing The Flash t-shirts because... well, I’m not totally sure, but the Flash started as a passing mention in the first rehearsal and culminated in a plastic figurine that moved around the pit and matching t-shirts. 🤷‍♂️ Thanks as always to Jeannie Wyse for having me on board. I’ve played a lot of shows at Randolph and it’s always nice to be back. I’ve been spending most of this week playing kit for “Gene Kelly: A Life in Music” with the @kingstonsymphony. Very fun but very challenging show: conductor Evan Mitchell has to sync all the music up to the film clips, and often he and I (and sometimes piano and percussion) are the only ones on click - the rest of the orchestra doesn’t have it. Lots of sudden tempo changes but beautiful music, and there’s nothing like driving an entire orchestra. . Given the style and time period of the music, decided to bring the vintage Slingerland kit (22/13/16) and re-covered 3-ply Radio King snare to the gig. I don’t play these drums out often but they sound killer for this music! Ride cymbal is an early 60’s Zildjian and the splash is too, formerly belonging to Robin Engelman. . Special thanks to Kingston Symphony for finding me great billets and to Marion and Hans Westenberg for opening their beautiful home to some musicians for a few nights!
