nana
words from "the white witch's heart" :
moon,spine,stars,hand,none,far,hear,circles,dead,wonder
dead body and clammy hands
found it in the woods when i was ten and
i asked grandma why vultures with their oil-slick feathers
flew in circles above it.
grandma said they were looking for her heart
and she gripped my hand tighter.
grandma was a stickler for the rules
straightened my spine with a yardstick
and made sure i swallowed all the stars i drank up
for my cosmic medication.
watched me as i looked in wonder at the moon
and tried to touch the nebulae with my muddied fingers.
she told me that the things you hear aren’t always the truest thing
and that if i wanted to go far, start running.
when i found the body, i heard the notes of life
strung out like grandma’s pasta
fade away,
5,4,3,2
none.
