Food Pantries and Cookies
I'm guessing most people have never gotten into an athletic van at 7 in the morning to go unload a truck of new deliveries from the regional food bank. While getting up early isn't really fun- the rest of our day was. We started bright and early at the People's Place Food Pantry/Thrift Shop in Kingston by doing anything and everything to help out. We had people vacuuming, dusting, unloading the food truck, organizing and sorting through food and clothing, and so much more.
Doing hard labor all morning was tiring yet fun. It's a good motivator when you can directly see how what you are doing is beneficial to people, and it's always interesting to talk to the regular volunteers at the sites and find out how they got involved and why they volunteer.
So afterwards we got a little break and baked some cookies with our Dean of Students-then came the struggle of finding dinner. A little tip for future reference- don't try to go to an Irish Pub on St Patrick's Day. Without a reservation and/or an ID that says you're 21- you have no shot. So dinner was pizza and story-telling at La Bella, which was fun all around.
