🏵️ About our charity...NQAPIA! 🏵️

We’re excited to announce that all Rhymin’ Zine proceeds after production will be donated to the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA), a US non-profit based in New York City serving as a federation for western LGBT organizations aiding citizens from all ethnically Asian backgrounds (East, South, Southeast, and Pacific Islander).

NQAPIA aims to “build the capacity of local LGBT AAPI organizations, invigorate grassroots organizing, develop leadership, and challenge homophobia, racism, and anti-immigrant bias.” As an intersectional organization, their work includes fighting for LGBT AAPI rights in Congress and in US Courts, providing therapy and healthcare resources for the uninsured, fighting against the rise of conservative politics in Asian communities, and advancing immigrants’ rights. Additionally, the organization is working in partnership with the NCTE to promote the upcoming 2022 U.S. Trans Survey.

🌿 Statistics

🏵️ An estimated 22.5 million Asians and Pacific Islanders live in the U.S. (census.gov)

🌸 LGBT AAPI adults have higher rates of unemployment than non-LGBT AAPI adults (11% vs. 8%) (Williams Institute) 🏵️ From March 19, 2020 to December 31, 2021, a total of 10,905 hate incidents against Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) persons were reported (Stop AAPI Hate) 🌸 131 hate crimes targeting Asians in New York were reported and confirmed in 2021 vs. 28 in 2020 (NYPD Statistics)

🌿 Why this cause? 

The NQAPIA works towards advocating for queer rights in Asian communities across North America and are based in NYC–Min and Ryan's dream city! Self-acceptance and living your life authentically against all odds–despite cultural, family, or societal pressures and expectations–are both themes prevalent in Book 4, which Asian people often struggle with due to generational trauma. There's additional pressure for those who identify as queer, but this charity helps ease the pain by providing public educational resources and by advocating for gay rights among Asian communities. Furthermore, the work of the NQAPIA benefits AAPI immigrants and diaspora like Min and Ryan, who are 1st or 2nd-generation and beyond, and dream of living their truths. The majority of our mod team is also part of the 1st-or 2nd-generation Asian-American diaspora and/or are part of the LGBTQ+ community, so this cause is very close to our hearts. Action proves more important than ever due to the rising hate crimes and misguided aggression towards Asians as a result of the pandemic, alongside the continued exclusion of LGBTQ+ people due to propositions of anti-gay legislation in certain states. Through this zine, we hope to make a positive contribution to the ongoing battle for the freedom to love and for the acceptance of all people.

On the 5th day of Pride, I say to y'all, We have come so far, even if we still have a long way to go. I have chosen to highlight Helen Zia, a Chinese-American activist. Zia graduated from Princeton University with the first class to allow women. She went on to medical school in the early 70s but left a couple of years later. She eventually found her calling, journalism, after working as a construction worker, an autoworker, and a community organizer. Her work to bring attention to Vincent Chin's racially motivated murder helped to mobilize the Asian-American community in Detroit. After his murderers were given very lenient sentences, the community protested and demanded better and tougher hate crime laws. She went on to write books about Asian immigration and immigrant experience in the US, becoming a well respected author. Zia also lent her voice to the intensifying marriage equality debate. After California legalized same sex marriage in 2008, Zia and her partner became one of the first same sex couples to get married in that state. She continues to explore the Chinese immigrant and queer Asian experience in America. Today I am sharing resources and donation opportunities from the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance. We are proud to be the recipient of National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance 2018 Community #CatalystAward- NY. For the first time in @nqapia’s 11-year history, a #Caribbean #LGBTQ organization was honored to uplift the queer brown and black voices we pridefully serve in NYC. In a display of diversity and Caribbean culture, the gala featured a sensational performance from Sundari Indian-Goddess and attendees danced the night away to soca, chutney and Bollywood beats by DJ Ushka. Thank you #NQAPIA for this recognition and congratulations to our fellow honoree, Suki Terada Ports!

On October 18, 2006, the AABANY LGBT Committee co-hosted, with NQAPIA, the LGBT Asian American/South Asian Attorney Reception.  More than seventy guests attended from law firms, in-house, public interest and government practices.  Along with numerous sponsors, the law firm of Baker & McKenzie in New York graciously hosted the event, and Jonathan Stevens, a partner in the firm’s Tax Practice Group, warmly welcomed all attendees. Justice Doris Ling-Cohan of the Appellate Term, First Department, a trailblazer and the first Asian American woman elected to the Supreme Court in New York, gave moving keynote remarks. NQAPIA president Glenn Magpantay introduced and showed a short film featuring Asian and South Asian American parents expressing their support for their LGBT children.

Coming Together: A LGBTQ Allyship Panel Workshop

Please join Project by Project (PbP), and their 2016 partner, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) as they present "Coming Together: A LGBTQ Allyship Panel Workshop." This workshop is aimed for the general public to generate awareness of the underlying issues of the AAPI LGBTQ community and how we can be better allies. Our panelists will provide a wide range of perspectives, situations and environments and ways allies can support the AAPI LGBTQ community. Topics include: a corporate perspective, a Family Acceptance Campaign called Family is Still Family, struggles of coming out and the need for allies, and other LGBTQ AAPI issues like immigration and racial justice after-Orlando. This year, National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) and Project By Project (PbP) are partnering to develop both organizations by leveraging their combined experiences, knowledge and skills. NQAPIA is dedicated toward building a world where all Asian Americans, South Asians, Southeast Asians, Pacific Islanders are fully accepted in their homes, families, places of work, places of worship and community regardless of their sexual orientation or gender-identity. PbP is an organization of professionals from a range of industries that uses its members to develop innovative solutions and apply them to serve non-profits in our local communities. Furthermore, training its members to be leaders within the AAPI community. Light refreshments will be provided.

For those of us who are LGBTQ and Muslim, we wait to see which of our identities we will be more fearful of disclosing in a world that questions our existence and intentions daily. We have found no contradiction in being both queer and Muslim, and reject the popular narrative that Islam or the Muslim community as a whole is homophobic and transphobic. We are proud to be both queer and Muslim, and cherish both of our communities.
