I started the National Quilters Circle quilt challenge this time around. I'm an absolute beginner at triangles and have only finished one large-ish quilt before, so this is definitely a challenge!

New Queer Cinema Rec List

For Pride Month this year I’ve decided to put together a rec list of one of my favourite eras in LGBT cinema, New Queer Cinema (NQC). New Queer Cinema is a movement that emerged in the early 1990s in America, first described by critic B. Ruby Rich in Sight and Sound magazine in 1992.

GENERAL THEMES

LGBT characters living on the edges of society as outcasts and rebels

unapologetic depictions of gay sex

aggressive opposition to a hetero-normative society

a bitter sense of rage in the post aids crisis era

fluidity of sexuality and gender

a celebration of the gay past often including dance, art etc.

This movement is not cohesive or strictly adhered to by writers/directors but merely exists as a blanket term encompassing a series of observable trends in independent LGBT cinema of the 90s. Many of these directors also have a body of work outside of NQC both before and after the era, some even breaking into the mainstream.

Keep in mind that many of these movies were made in the late 80s to 90s and are products of their time, for better or worse. These movies are predominantly focused upon men, something I put down to the fact that their were less barriers for men (especially white men) to create independently funded cinematic projects. This lack of non-white, female or trans directors makes portrayals of these groups sadly somewhat rarer (and lead in many cases to less than ideal depictions). These movies still however have great value as cinema and as images of LGBT people in cinema history.

Because there is a lot of argument about when NQC begins and ends, for this list I’m going to go from the late 1980s “precursors” to the early 2000s stragglers of the genre. With that out of the way here are my recommendations (personal faves/essentials are marked by **):

Năm nay mình có quà 8/3 sớm, 1 phần anh ta sợ tôi hết tiền xài. Vâng! 1 đống đồ skincare và dầu gội tôi cần mua đấy nhưng ko sao mình vẫn có thể tự chi tự tính và Spaylater lun dõi theo từng bước chân tui.

Làm người không nên quá tham lam và mình đã back lại 1 nửa vì quá nhiều.!

Cũng 1 phần, bản thân không còn muốn dựa dẫm ai nữa. Ngay cả tệ tới đâu cũng không còn muốn khóc cho ng khác nhìn, “khóc cho ai xem”!

Vơn nay ngựa đi triệt lông nên tốn tiền vl. Bớt ngựa lại điiii 😫

Quà sinh nhật gì mà trễ thật trễ. Sinh nhật đầu thánng trước nhưng sang thánng sau mới có quà kèm lí do là không biết tặng gì cả.

Mỗi ngày, ngày nào em cũng giận vì sinh nhật em, anh không chúc, không quà gì hết.

Hoá ra là do em tắt thông báo không biết nên trách nhầm anh hả. 🥺
