“You could have asked,” Remus said softly, forcing himself to look at Sirius. Forcing himself to confront his anger and his disappointment head on when everything in him was screaming at him to just let this drop. To cave in. To play the peacemaker like he always did and simply apologize so that they could go on like they always had. But that was the problem, wasn’t it? That’s how they ended up here, even after so many years of practically living in each other’s pockets, they still didn’t know how to talk to one another at all. “You just never did,” he pointed out, steadily holding Sirius’ dark gaze as something vicious gripped at his heart. “And each time that you looked at me like you’re doing right now, all I could wonder was if you actually wanted to know,” he continued, voice still so gentle even as he closed the distance between them so that they were only a hair’s breadth apart. “Because here’s the thing, Sirius, I don’t think you ever wanted to hear the truth from me."
