If I had a penny for every time an indie game about a little cat-like creature exploring abandoned industrial facilities made by an ancient technologically advanced Asian-inspired civilization had a "wawa" meme in its fandom, I'd have... 2 pennies! Which isn't a lot, but it's still pretty interesting to see something so specific happen twice!

As a Rain World fan, I was so pleasantly surprised to see that Nine Sols also has a "wawa" meme, based on one of Nuwa's talking sound effects! This little doodle quickly emerged as a result!

A Feng-Filled Birthday

Guess whose birthday this year just so happened to land on a Feng Friday—!!

I was hoping to celebrate by making some cute art of my current faves anyway, but the fact the special occasion was on just the right day of the week for Feng art was a neat little cherry on top! I figured I'd also throw some text in and have a little typography fun, since playing with text arrangement and making poster-like things is actually something I enjoy when I get the chance. And then I just threw in some Chinese words for added flare. Here's hoping I used the correct translation for "happy birthday"!

Fuxi cape sketches!

Nuwa uses this big red and gold cloak to hide Fuxi's mutation by the time we meet him, but what if Fuxi actually had it before he got all messed-up too? With how large and imposing it makes him look, I imagine he might've worn it to important meetings or formal events, similarly to how Nuwa wears her red one-piece garment to her banquets.

Either way, I like Fuxi with a cape, whether it's this one or the one he wears in the opera; so big and strong and elegant! And I'm sure Nuwa would enjoy it too!

Fuxi and Nuwa sketch based on that last memory/dream in Nuwa's Soulscape. I'd like to try redrawing the whole thing someday, but for now, I just wanted to practice drawing their faces and make sure could make them look decent in their opera outfits. Plus, I like to think those moments on stage were very special for both of them, so I wanted to see if I could visually express those soft feelings I imagine them having had for each other in those times. May try rendering this one eventually, but I'll see how I feel about that.

(This is not incest. I've got plans for an AU where Fuxi and Nuwa aren't biologically related to explain it better, but in general, my content of them as romantic lovers won't be incestuous.)

Happy Feng Friday! Although maybe not so happy for whoever the unfortunate victim was...

Here's a touched-up sketch I made a few weeks ago!

I don't know about you guys, but I've come to see Fuxi as the kind of guy who can, will, and has gotten blood on his hands to protect and advance the Feng clan. I mean, given the canon implications that the Fengs have been up to some shady business, he likely doesn't have an issue with allowing other members of the clan to use more "extreme" measures at the least, if it wasn't that he himself was responsible for said shady business decisions as the clan's leader. He may keep quiet and let Nuwa do most of the talking in public, and he may have an artistic and romantic side that he lets out on stage, but it'd be a grave mistake to take him as dull, shy, or weak based on that. He's like a great serpent, keeping careful watch and biding his time for the perfect moment to strike...

Also a headcanon: before he got mutated, I imagine Fuxi's zhu was sturdy and well-built enough that it could double up as a blunt-force weapon when needed. I just think it's kinda cool/funny to imagine him making music one moment and then slapping someone with his instrument the next without missing a beat, like those images of people using guitars as weapons. Plus, with Nuwa's crazy snake-construct-summoning flute, I like the idea that Fuxi's musical instrument has at least some kind of offensive utility as well, even in his normal state. Whatever the case though, I imagine Fuxi's instrument wouldn't be quite as powerful as Nuwa's in terms of sheer damage-dealing potential, since unlike Nuwa, he's athletic enough that he can actually fight with other weapons or even his bare hands if necessary. And I get the feeling this dynamic would add to my personal idea of there being sexual dimorphism between the two in some way or another, though I'm not sure how to describe it yet.

Some doodles of the Fengs, who are honestly becoming my favorite characters in Nine Sols as a whole! The first is a preliminary sketch I made when I was trying to figure out how to draw them, while the second is a collection of fluffy doodles of them being soft with each other that I decided to finish up (because I actually just finished the game's true ending and I want happier, more wholesome things to think about)!

Oh, and just a note: I know about the whole implications between Fuxi and Nuwa in canon, but when it comes to my depictions of them as romantic lovers, it won't be incestuous. I'm working on an AU where they aren't biologically related to better explain it and possibly explore their relationship further, but I just wanted to clear that up.

Bounded AU Intro-thing

NOTE: For now, unless I specify otherwise, all content I make for the Fengs, particularly any portraying them as a romantic couple, will take place in the context of this AU.

I may have mentioned it before, but I've been trying to craft a Feng-focused AU thing where Fuxi and Nuwa aren't biologically related, so I thought I'd at least get the idea out there! I might make a longer, more polished reference post later once I've solidified the details of the AU more.

The basic premise for this alternate universe is as follows: instead of being Fuxi's biological twin sister, Nuwa is a shim-pua daughter bought by the Fengs from another noble family and raised in their household so that she would become Fuxi's wife once the two came of age—an expectation which weighs heavily on both of them in different ways. The aspect of Nuwa not being a "real" Feng may impact her and Fuxi's history and relationship in this AU, but I'm still working on a lot of the specifics with this project. Overall, this AU will focus on exploring the nature of Nuwa and Fuxi's history and relationship more deeply, especially from a romantic or intimate lense, and offering an idea for how and why it have possibly developed in the first place.

If anyone is interested, I'm open to do peer review for my ideas to get feedback and brainstorm as I expand on this AU. I want to do my best with this little project!

To practice concept art again and try my hand at drawing her, here's some little exploration sketches I made for the Solarian I interpreted as being Fuxi's mother. I'm gonna call her Huaxu (华胥) for now, based on what I could find about the characters' mythological counterparts.

Regardless of whatever "plot" I choose for my Bounded AU, Huaxu will probably serve as a prominent and/or important character. Since Fuxi's Soulscape fragments seem to suggest she has or had decent authority in the Feng clan, I'm thinking, until Fuxi comes of age and assumes his position as a leader, Huaxu serves as the de facto leader of the Feng clan. Her role would likely be to manage the family's major affairs on her son's behalf, and she'd take primary responsibility over preparing him to be a proper leader when the time comes.

I'm considering her being sort of a "main antagonist" because it might just make sense for some of my ideas, but no matter the case, I want her to be nuanced rather than totally unsympathetic. I feel there's a lot I could do with her, and a lot of questions I may need to answer to make it work, but I'll see where she takes me eventually.
