June 23-July1, 2017- I was at the National Student Leadership Conference-Engineering (NSLC) in Houston, Texas. Going into this, I was expecting to learn just about engineering, but it was that and so much more. I was 1 of 11 girls and 47 people total. Some of the places we went were a ropes course, the Offshore Energy Center, Kemah Boardwalk, Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Johnson Space Center, and we got to hear a speech from an aerospace engineer from NASA. For the engineering part, we built Sea Perchers, Trebuchets, Communication Towers, and Wind Turbines. We were put into groups to come up with different ideas for different problems. We had a grand challenge where we had to come up with a product to help change the world and present them. We also got to learn about the different jobs within engineering. Within the leadership portion were many different activities. We did a personality matrix, learning about our own and different peoples personalities. We talked about dealing with breakdowns, communition, and negotiation. We did these activities called The Line and Dyatic Encounter. The best part if these activities is that everyone was so open and honest about their experiences. I connected with people I probably wouldn't have otherwise. Everyone was so nice. I grew super close to the other girls in the program. My TA Group, led by Rory, really helped make this whole experience so fun. From yelling "ROOOARY" to inside jokes(show dem wunken whaippos no mercy) to working together in our challenges, and just being so energetic. We may have gotten 3rd in most of most of the competitions (we did win all the ice breaker games!!), but I still had a blast. Thank you to all my fellow Rorians. I made so many new friends from around the country that I am going to stay in touch with forever. I learned that to change the world, you can do at least one good deed every day. Even if it's small, you're still changing the world. I don't think anything will ever top this experience. (More info/pics on my Facebook!) #NSLCENGN (at Rice University)
