#FollowFriday Kiara Smith
Today’s #followfriday feature is
Kiara Smith, Founder of Year O.N.E. College Consulting
Addison, Texas Higher Education
What industry are you in? Higher Education
How did you get your start in your current industry? At Saint Louis University, my freshman advisor, Pamela Jackson, was my ‘mom away from home.’ She not only helped from an academic perspective, but from a personal one as well. Although I was a MFT (marriage and family therapy) major, I knew I wanted to offer the same type of support to students that she was to me. Eventually I made my way into higher education as an admissions rep and have been an academic advisor for the past four years.
My husband, Maulik, also saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. Last December, he mentioned for the third time that I should start my own business helping high school students get ready for college. And in January, Year O.N.E. College Consulting was born out of my passion for student success and retention. Recently, I expanded my services to assist anyone that is interested in going to college, whether a new or returning student. Everyone deserves an opportunity to achieve their educational goals and Year O.N.E. is a great resource to start with!
“Getting into college is not always the hard part, but staying in college is.”
What is your favorite quote? Successful people do what other people are unwilling to do. Susan Fletcher Favorite scripture: “It is impossible to please God without faith.” Hebrews 11:6
What is your favorite movie? The Shining…I LOVE SCARY MOVIES!!!
What’s your favorite tweet? @heatherllove We pray for something. God answers our prayers. Then we spend a lifetime complaining about our answered prayers. Be thankful instead. (This was truly a gut check for me to be more mindful.)
What is the best advice you’ve received?
Do not worry!

I love what I do and all of the amazing people I meet inspire me on a daily basis.
