Though Autechre are more or less mega-stars of a genre of their own creation, they are so prolific and their sound so dense that their individual tracks get lost in the noise of the over-all Autechre experience. Their music has always reminded me of one of those 3D eye puzzles where you have to focus your eyes in such a way as to be able to see the hidden image: Upon first listening, their music is just a mesh of beats and white-noise with only a modicum of order. But as you listen further and your aural focus adjusts, patterns, colours and melody emerge and the true shape of their music becomes apparent.
One of my favourite Autechre tracks is Nuane. What begins as an unexceptional pulse of white-noise sound-bites builds into an expansive electro-space-jazz epic that could have easily been the soundtrack to Bladerunner. Nuane also points to Autechre's b-boy origins with melodic bleeps and tweets reminiscent of the hey-day of 'positive hip-hop' emerging out of it's forbidding techno-noir beat-scape. This tune lingers in my mind for days even after just a single listen. I highly recommend getting a high quality version of this track and abandoning your physical self for a journey to the future.
