Roots of Unity is such a cool term that I have to incorporate them into the Numberbeasts universe somehow. I think in a universe with n dimensions (which is what the Numberbeasts universe operates on, in a geometric sense), there are n nth Roots of Unity, which are Complex numberbeasts of the numerical values for those Roots of Unity. And they anchor the mathematics of the Numberbeasts universe in that dimension. There is only one of each Root of Unity present and there has to be one otherwise

actually scratch what I just said about there being only one of each Root of Unity because 1 is a cube Root of Unity LMAO

They still have some weird metaphysical property of anchoring the universe in that dimension.... uhhhh Zygonetics is researching how that works (aka I haven't figured it out yet) but maybe 1 being a cube Root of Unity is how Zygonetics first learns about the Imaginary Timeline?

uhhh I decided to draw the Operators

or at least the main ones (I've forgone the idea that Add and Multiply are evil, they do have utility in pacifying number beasts as fractional number beasts can be just as dangerous as extremely large ones)

btw the Operator names are not their actual names, they are just, like, normal people

I envision that they get recruited to be Operators through entering a mysterious maths tournament which they win, without initially knowing that this is the prize

btw Subtract and Multiply are wearing visors, Divide is factually missing an eye

I'm not completely sold on Add's weapon, the problem is that '+' is just 'X' at an angle so it's hard to just make the same weapon twice... I suppose Multiply could use the asterisk, but that's more of a computer science thing

Addition is likely the Operation with the lowest capacity for harming number beasts and people. With Subtraction there is the possibility of accidentally over-subtracting and making a negative number beast whereas for an Addition Operation to result in a negative number beast there needs to already be one around. With Multiplication it's easier to make much larger number beasts, however the capacity for harm is still quite limited compared to higher operations like exponentiation and the hyperoperations. Of course with Division it's quite easy to end up with an irrational (EDIT: I meant fractional!!!) number beast. Bad. Real bad.

I decided that their Operator attires should all be the same colours because like, they're just the rookies, the outfits aren't that personalised, also some of the colours just kind of looked bad, especially the dark yellow on Rocco

also I did all these on Krita because I found a cool dithering brush on there

all they know is make extremely large numbers/surds (respectively) eat hot chip and lie

they are cutes... Power Operator reminds me of the pink catgirl from Deltarune (someday I'll play that game). Root Operator looks like a pine tree (intentional. ROOT.) Root symbol as a scythe was inspired lol.

It's kind of hard for me to justify their existence so I'll just word vomit here and see if anything makes sense. So Zygonetics wants to understand numberbeasts. And have control over them. SSo it synthesises the Operations. It starts off small, with Addition and Subtraction. Well, Multiplication is just repeated Addition, and Division is just reversed Multiplication. Well, Exponentiation is just repeated Multiplication, and Root Extraction is just the reverse of Exponentiation. But there's no good reason to give these powers to people - the Exponent Operations are only really useful in making scary numberbeasts. But Zygonetics notices that the Operators have become heroes to the general public due to their work fighting off scary numberbeasts. And that admiration towards the Operators feeds into goodwill towards Zygonetics. And profit. So, Zygonetics thinks, what's the harm in throwing a few more beasts the Operators' way? They can handle it and it means more money for us! Ok that makes sense.

These two probably have a sad story behind them. They are a bit younger than the RithOps, and probably have been manipulated to believe that real life is a game that they are viewing through their visors. And the other Operators are just NPCs for them to fight against. When RithOps inevitably notices that they are dressed like Operators, their management team tells them that the ExOps are a rogue group who stole the technology and are trying to use it to destroy the good work of Zygonetics. And that is all they know about the situation.

HAHA! surprise numberbeasts lore attack!!!

I have thoughts about how they become Operators. Basically Zygonetics is a tech company that manufactures a bunch of stuff, from smart devices and prosthetic limbs to weapons and surveillance technologies. They are the most powerful corporation in the country and have indirect control over everything. Operators are their answer to the threat of extremely large number beasts threatening to destroy the country (and all their assets.....) To find Operators they hold a national mathematics tournament to find the 'smartest' youths in the country. Then they take them in and give them... a calculator. But beware! This calculator is fucked up! It embeds itself into the kid's skin and now they are an Operator and they get cool maths powers :'D

You can bet they argue about which one of them actually came first in the tournament... at first...

oh yea first look at the Union Operator... She's an older Operator who is often tasked with inducting the newbies. Bri particularly sees her as a role model.
