There are many ways to number chapters, that’s obvious.
However, in my very subjective view, Roman numerals are the correct way.
If it ever goes out of style to number chapters this way, I will continue to use it, no matter public opinion.
They are simple to write, and (pretty) simple to teach.
The answer to most questions is “I don’t know, this is how the Romans did it”
Why is four spelled IV instead of something like IIII? Less strokes, and the Romans did it.

This post is dramatic, I will say. It’s also not that simple in reality. But it’s what I like, so that’s how I’m doing it. I’m also not taking myself seriously in this. It’s melodrama. But if you wanna number your chapters with Roman numerals, look it up. I don’t remember all the rules for it.
