The advice “Use Double Precision” contradicts an ancient Rule of Thumb, namely “Arithmetic should be barely more precise than the data and the desired result” ... **This Rule of Thumb is Wrong.** It was never quite right, but it’s still being built into programming languages and taught in school. ...
