With a smile, you can bring new life and hope and courage into the hearts of the weary, the overburdened, the discouraged, the tempted, and the despairing. Your smile can prepare the way for a sinner’s return to God. It can promote contentment, joy, satisfaction, encouragement, and confidence in the hearts of others. Let all enjoy the beauty and inspiring cheer of your smiling face. Above all, smile at God in loving acceptance of whatever He sends into your life, and you will deserve to have the radiantly smiling face of Christ gaze on you with special love throughout eternity || Father Lawrence G. Happy Flag Day! Last year, the Latin-American sisters in our exchange program proudly displayed the flag and their enthusiasm for America in New York City.
Sister Yelitza Ayala Gilot, from the Dominican Sisters of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima in Puerto Rico, graduated with a master’s degree in applied leadership from Boston College. As part of the U.S.-Latin American Sisters Exchange Program, she coordinated catechists, taught Bible classes, and led a youth community choir in Jacksonville, Texas. Congratulations, sister!
Born prematurely into a poor family in the highlands of Colombia, Sister Maryud spent her first weeks of life in an incubator. At 9 months she contracted a spinal infection, which left her unable to walk at age 1.
Her father pleaded with the Virgin Mary for healing, and at age 9 she suddenly started feeling her feet again and miraculously began to walk. She was behind several grades when she was finally able to attend school, and studied hard to catch up.
At 17, she joined the Missionary Servants of the Divine Spirit. That same year, her congregation asked her to go to the United States as part of Catholic Extension’s newly established U.S.-Latin American Sisters Exchange Program.
She served in the Diocese of Kalamazoo for five years, providing comfort, faith formation, pastoral care, home visits and youth programs to migrant workers and their families.
Now she is completing the program, and will earn her master’s degree in applied leadership from Boston College this month.
She dreams of creating self-improvement workshops for women, parochial leadership programs and youth English classes. “My greatest hope is to share all the tools I have received in this country,” she said.
